“After bonding at Miami’s Music Conference in 2008 after Anstascia nearly ran Vivie -Ann over with her car outside Space at eight in the morning, these two Canadian DJ/ producers decided to hijack Wednesday nights at the ‘dungeonesque’ Cherry Club back home in their native Montreal, under the moniker Blond:ish.
Holding down a monthly residency ever since, attracting a huge following of ‘hipsters, freaks and industry party people all mixed into once crazy venue”, the quirky duo has gone on to treat crowds at some of the world’s biggest festivals – such as Burning Man and the BPM festival in Mexico- to their ever- evolving vision of house.
With releases on noted tech-house labels Get Physical, Monique Music and Noir, their latest fascination for psychedelic nostalgia, classic drum kits, elongated guitar solos and sticky vocals, which owes much to their parents’ 60s wax collection, bleeds in to a steady 4/4 pattern, yet dodges genre piegonholing. “It’s more about a feeling than a label. At the end of the day, we play house,” Anstascia says.
Both say that family holidays to Europe in their teens were responsible for their indoctrination to proper electronic music- and their move to London a little over a year ago proved to be the turning point that helped them shape their current sound. “As a new DJ in the London scene all the cards are against you, but we’ve finally found our niche here,” says Vivie-Ann.
The duo promise more sounds and less defined structures in the future, and also have plans for a live act. “One thing’s for sure though,” says Anstascia. “We won’t be making dubstep anytime soon!” Anyone who loves psychedelic inflected house music will be glad.”
